Ben Graham got involved in archery early in life and came to love hunting. After he and Linda got married in 1987, they both did a great deal of hunting and 3D target shooting together. Ben got into bow building when he decided to build a bow for himself. He already owned custom bows built by other people, but he wasn't completely satisfied with the way the grips felt in his hand. His remedy was to build himself a bow to his liking. He was happy with the way it turned out, and so were many of his friends. His new-found skill was becoming a part-time job in his basement. Eventually, he left the full-time job he had at the time, fully equipped a workshop, and began bow building full-time. He called his business Hummingbird Custom Bows.

Ben's wife Linda became an essential part of Hummingbird. Linda was always at Ben's side, whether he was at a booth at an archery event or in the woods hunting elk and other game. She has also exercised skill in making beautiful arrows. Linda has been winner of many 3D archery tournaments. It was not uncommon for Linda to win trophies in one of the top three places everywhere she went. She enjoyed being in the woods with Ben and developed a passion for hunting. Both Ben and Linda have always been willing to help anyone with their archery skills and share what they know.

Many may wonder where Ben got the idea to call his bows "Hummingbird." He didn't go with his first idea, which was to name it "Ben's Piercer." Ben made an observation one day that arrows being shot made the same sound as hummingbirds he had seen and heard coming to their feeders. He also noticed that many other bows were named after predators, and all the predator names seemed to be taken. But he also realized that not everyone who shot bows also hunted. He wanted to make bows that appealed to archers whether they hunted or not. The Hummingbird name fit.

Archery has come a long way over the years, and there have been many devoted bowyers who have strived to improve longbows and recurves so they could become what they are today. Ben is among these committed individuals. There are several things Ben believed were important and desirable in a custom bow: a smooth draw, a lack of stack, speed, quietness, and a custom-fit grip. He felt these things should be in a bow, and he provided them. Through their hard work and lifestyle, we see in Ben and Linda an illustration of those who promoted, supported, and were a part of furthering traditional archery.

After years of bow building, Ben admitted that though he was doing something he loved, it was still work. Being a bowyer had its hardships and trying moments, but he said that what kept him building bows was the satisfaction that came from working with the beautiful woods that God created and knowing he had put together something useful, admired, and appreciated. Fast and beautiful, Hummingbird custom bows live up to their name.
